if 4/4 lumber is measured length X width x one, divided by 144 to get total board foot of a board-
then would you measure 2/4 stock like this?
length x width x one, divided by 144, divided by 50 percent ???

Thanks
Dave

Dave;
Rather then type it all in I C&P this from another web site.

<TABLE cellPadding=5 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top bgColor=#f1f0c3>
(Thickness x Width x Length) / 144 = Board Feet

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top bgColor=#f1f0c3>Note: Lumber is specified by its rough size. This is why a 1"x 4" board is actually 3/4" thick and a 2"x 4" board is actually 1-1/2" thick.</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top bgColor=#f1f0c3>When you are figuring up board feet, keep in mind a waste factor. If you purchase good clear material add about 15% for waste, if you elect to use lower grade material you will have to allow for defects and more wasted material -add about 30%. Take a few boards and run the measurements and you will see how easy this works.

I suppose you are right in this, but I have never seen someone selling 2/4 by the board foot. It has been my experinece that for stock thinner than 4/4 it is often sold by the square foot.

The formula for BF is (thickness x width x length)/ 144. If the lumber is 4/4, then thickness is 1; if it is 5/4, then thickness is 1.25; etc.

Yeah. In fact, there is a local hardwood dealer who sells 1/2" thick lumber for a higher per-square-foot price than 4/4 lumber! When I asked him why, he said "Well, we have to send it through the planer more times."

That sounds fair to me.

Dave,

We charge by standard bf (WxL/144xT) until we get below 4/4. Then we switch to Surface Measure (SM) because we're running the saw thru the log more times. What is it that you're buying 2/4?
