Anyone have thoughts on making a fairly large bag to collect chips from a lunchbox planer? I'm thinking landscape fabric, maybe 4 ft long.

Most folks use a dust collector so at least some of the dust is captured too. Are you working outside or inside?

I do that. I have my DW735 ducted about 6 feet to a 20u fabric filter bag from Woodcraft.
I know it's not catching the dust, but it catches about 95% + of the chips. This is assuming your planer has a blower.

I tried similar. Tried a shop vac. I finally broke down and bought a real dust collector and external cyclone separator that dumps into a steel garbage can. one of the best things I have done.

DeWalt once had an accessory that was a fabric "Funnel" that fit the top of a trash can and the outlet of the Planer. Catches all the chips but the fine dust comes out through the porous bag. Works well. I gave mine to a friend when I installed a dust collector system and he still uses it and likes it. Not sure that DeWalt still offers this item.
