I've a used Hitachi Band Saw Model CB 75F that's on my way, but it has the stock 2+HP motor. I've read many comments that these saws are underpowered and really benefit from a 5HP 220V motor upgrade. Can someone please point me to a replacement 5HP motor that will fit the mounting arrangement of the CB75F? Thank you.

Elektrim Motors are decent: http://www.toolmex.com/Products/BrowseResults.aspx?CatID=2483&&parent=&pageno=4&cat=2483
I’m sure it’ll work fine but 5hp seems like a bit of overkill on the machine?

i put a 5 hp foot mount 1725 rpm on mine and made a simple mount with pillow blocks.

Jack,
That is a brilliantly simple elegant solution to mounting the replacement motor. What are the pieces you used to tension the belt, holding the threaded rod? It looks like some sort of pivoting attachment.

All the plate stock is aluminium cut on a wood cutting band saw or my chop saw/RAS with VFD. same as the piece with the threaded rod tension-er. you could most likely for go the privet part of it but i used a taper pin for that.

I did upgrade the bearings to SKF C3 with rubber seals but at some point in the Model up grades(CB75/100)they changed the bottom bearing to a 62XX? deep grove same as the top wheel but mine the B600a(predecessor to the CB75F) has the massive 308 roller bearing. I made Ampco bronze blade guides to replace the phenolic OEM ones that i though would not hold up to the heaver work load. you need carbide to cut the Ampco 18.

Jack, are those U-channel on top of the guides stock ? Mine doesn't have them, and its hard to adjust , as the guides move when you tighten the wing nuts.
I guess i will fab up something like that regardless.

Thanks

Yes they are OEM/stock. I did end up changing the wing screws for socket head screws to get better torque and this did the trick for me.

Jack (and all), thank you for the details. Which auto-feed do you use? Thanks, again.

Jack,
Very impressive! Wanna come to Seattle and upgrade my B600a? I only use it for resawing and have wanted to change-out the motor for years.

Thanks Bill. I pick it up for $200 and had the motor and switch gear and feeder in the rat hole. it needed a bath when i got it.

I'm thin-en out my handsaw heard and traded the B600a for a Aciera F4 milling machine in a horse trade.

not that that has helped as i am working on this one next i pick up this summer and have been looking for one for years.

I would not say they are underpowered so much as the noise they make with the gear reduction universal motor is so annoying that I changed mine just for that reason. Set it up like Jacks. Try it with the stock motor and if it doesn't make you want to shoot yourself after running it for a couple of hours, leave it.

That is an awesome saw, one of the tools that I sold when I moved my shop that I regret selling. I had the double bearing guides on mine and just left a 2" blade in it all the time and used it just for resaw. I kept my 20" Delta because it is more versatile, maybe made the wrong choice.

Congrats. Very nice saw, you will love it.

Larry

PS: 5hp is not too much for that saw. I put a 5hp 3ph Baldor on mine and it was just right.

Larry, thanks for the reply. Do you have a recommendation for an automatic feed for this saw?

Jeff the feeder i used on this one was because thats what i hand lying around. and it worked fine

http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-G4173-Baby-Power-Feeder/dp/B0000DD29X

what this feeder let me do was mount it in the way you see over head so the saw could be use with ease when not re sawing on it. All i do is swing it up out of the way.

what is important is that the feeder has a veritable feed rate(not just feed settings) from 0 to about 30 feet a min. If i wanted the saw to be a strict re saw and money was not a problem i would get the Laguna Power feederfence
