I'm building a cart that has 4x4 posts in the corners. I have 1/2-13 studded casters and was planning on using T-nuts in the legs. I'm having heck of a time trying to find a source for them locally - most everyone only carries them up to 3/8-18. I found some square base screw on weld nuts on-line but rather pick up something locally tomorrow. Would J-B welded std. hex. nuts work OK?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

If McMaster Carr or Grainger doesn't have it... you don't need it.

I'd like to see McMaster's printed catalog. I hear it exists. Must be a foot thick.

To answer your question: Yes, glued-in hex nuts would work fine.

Have one of the catalogs. Only about three inches, but the paper is the thinnest ever.

Connector nuts are longer and may be the best solution if you decide to glue in nuts. They're available at most hardware stores.

I have one of those. My Newark Electronics catalog has it beat, believe it or not!

I have used connector nuts to install threaded rubber pads on a friend's pool table. I used a forstner bit to drill a hole in the leg and used epoxy glue to install the nuts. Connector nuts are usually avaliable at Home Depot in the electrical department by the conduit and threaded rod. The longer nut will provide more lateral support when used with casters.

I bet Amazon can find them and have them to you in two days.

You're right. They are rare and fairly expensive.

Some caster suppliers have them in zinc plated steel if you want to buy 4 for $20 or so.

Only ones I could find that weren't a fortune were in Stainless Steel at around $3.50 each or $2.50 in quantity. I ended up buying these:

3/8" is the largest size that is common.

Plain steel $13.58 for 20. Bet they are under a buck a piece shipped because McMaster's rates for shipping while not available at checkout have never been anything but amazingly low for me. Plus I bet if Mike orders them before about 7 today, he'll have them tomorrow since they have a location in Elmhurst, IL and their shipping is amazingly fast.

They look a little heftier.

I don't remember the details, but I found that buying t-nuts from places that supply 'climbing walls' (google: climbing wall holds) was very-much less-expensive than anywhere else.

Just did a quick check, and they seem to all be the 3/8 size..... but I found 100 pack of premium nuts for $10.45.
