While going through my scrap box under the pretense of cleaning out some stuff I came upon a little scrap of ash too good to throw away but too small to do anything with.... I managed to use all but 3/16" of the stick in this little bitty box 2 1/2" X 3 1/2" and 2 3/4" tall to the top of the walnut handle... Ain't it cute???? :p :o

I know I have too much time on my hands so don't tell me that I do.... :D

Looks great!

So, what are you going to do with the remaining 3/16? ;)

Nice job! The corner splines pointing down really accentuate the form of the top. Very neat.

Neat job, Michael. Nice design. I like the routed edge for the top to fit in. Some of my favorite projects have been small ones. Keep working.

Excellent piece. I'm always amazed by you guys that build this small stuff and make it look so good.

That is a very cool piece! I love the design and the contrast with the splines and knob is a great.

Mike how did you get the nice even top like you did?

Thanks for the nice comments. I appreciate them all. :D

David, I assume you mean how did I get an even curve across the lid from end to end and side to side.

I start out by marking the depth of the rabbet on the outside of the box all the way around. The rabbet is not cut as deeply as the thickness of the piece for the lid. Then I mark the minimum thickness/thinness that I want at the corners. I wedge the lid blank in place and begin sanding lid and box until I am slightly above my maximum depth marks. Then it is just a matter of blending the curves from side to side and end to end. I do it by eye. I have done a lot of boxes with lids this way so I guess I am practiced at it...

Very nice Mike...Time well spent. A scrap of Ash...turned into an heirloom. Sounds worthwhile to me!
