View Full Version : Band Saw table pin.....

I have a Jet 14" band saw and the table pin is sometimes a real pain. About 8 out of 10 times I change the blade I have to get a wrench to get the pin out.

So today I went to change the blade and had to get a wench to get the pin out and decided that has to be a better way. Drilled a hole in the head of the pin and installed a 1/8" spiral pin, works great and now I never have to get a wrench out again.

Neat trick. Funny how the simple fixes work better than spending a boat load of money.

That's a great fix!
Now, if I can just find my pin (having misplaced it one too many times during a blade change.)

This actually begs the question: what's the purpose of the pin anyway?

Oddly enough I didn't learn the purpose of the pin until after I sold my 14in. The pin connects the two halves of the table that are broken by the path of the blade as you insert it. With no pin they are just both hanging out and sagging in space. Pounding the pin in too tight will cause the two halves of the table to be out of alignment. Hold a straightedge across the full table and watch what happens as you insert and tighten (and overtighten) the pin.

Aha-
I have noticed that I have a little lip at the split.
Darn, where is that pin?!

Nice shop made solution. It's funny how long something annoys us before we fix it! Guilty as charged.

Thanks for posting. I will have to get mine done. I will try to put a pin with a keychain ring on mine that I will use to chain it to the saw.

Hopefully that will help me to stop misplacing it.

If Jet was to insert that roll pin at the factory, they would have to charge another $10.

My problem with the pin is that I have lost it twice. Ordered two from Jet and never lost one again.

Nice fix! Mine takes a 3mm Allen key, which I keep on the saw with a magnet.

I wish the problem with editing posts with Forum Runner would get fixed.

had to get a wench to get the pin out

She must have strong fingers. Giggle.

Great solution Bill. I usually take the Neanderthal approach and get it moving with the claw hammer.

Gloat... gloat... gloat... gloat... gloat...

Now my PWBS-14CS CAME with a nice handle on the pin... That's what you get when you buy REAL tools...

I just took the pin out of my GO555 and now leave it in a drawer.

Don't you worry about the table warping over time?

Geez some of you guys must really have that sucker in there or conversely got tired of dealing with it. I can't say that I have ever thought getting it out was much of a problem....more of an inconvenience for about a minute. My small bandsaw pin is not hard to move and the 14" bandsaw pin has a handle. Nice way to deal with it if it is a bother though....good idea.

I would not be leaving it out of there though. Not in favor of that one.

Don't you worry about the table warping over time? "What me worry"? I have had it out for years now and no problems. If I have a problem I will then put the pin back in place.

Sometimes the pin on my old 14" Delta BS will stick. But a light, judicious application of hammer claws easily loosens it "finger loose"....

Of course it is... On the other hand, when you add in the cost of the Carter guides and tension release... Is it still cheaper???

Nice fix. Just watch out if you have a small, messy (real messy) shop. I have bumped into that pin squeezing buy the bandsaw a few times. That little pin sticking out looks like it would stick me good. Of course if you have a large shop and can clear the bandsaw easily it is most likely no issue :)....John

I keep the pin pointed down all the time, the pin is just long enough that it will stick above the table so it will always remind me to tun it down.
My shop is not very large, 12' x 16' and with the band saw, table saw, drill press, router table, sander and a bench I don't have all that much room.
