Oiled the base up this morning. I won't bore you with any more pics until it's all sprayed. :D

Beautiful work-great design.

Couple questions, what type wood did you use for the square pegs?
What kind of spray equipment are you using?
Thanks, Corvin

Nice work in all respects.

Would you mind explaining what you did with the screws or bolts and the support bracket? If you did it already, I missed it. Thanks.

Yowza!! I'm so glad we have a mesquite worker on SMC who so proudly displays his works for us! :)

Nice work in all respects.

All the wings are 'slot cut' into the mating base piece, and then a screw driven though the top piece (wing) into the lower piece (apron or end assembly). The end wing pieces are short, and are screwed into the longer side wing pieces that go across. There's a small 'extra' piece glued to the end wings at the inside...those are just for top attachment screws.

I'll start gluing up the top this morning.

KC, this is looking great. Like everyone else has noted, the grain is fantastic. This is going to be a real show piece.

That's gorgeous. What technique did you use to get the final surface finish? Scraping, sanding, etc?

Droooling here. I've got a small mesquite project on the burner. If it comes out half as good as your's looks I'm going to be a happy camper.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. :)

I only use a scraper as a last resort...like when I can't get a sander to reach. Sanders are my friends. :o On mesquite table bases (and the like), I sand to 150 and call it done. I'll go over the whole thing with 0000 steel wool before I spray it. On the top, I'll sand to 220, then wet sand the WATCO with 320...and hit that with steel wool also before spraying.

I started gluing the top today, in three sections for ease of drum sanding. I learned that even though the plastic resin glue has more open time than the yellers, you still can't screw around once you start...especially when the thermometer says 97 (at noon!). Worse still, I have to turn the fan off so it doesn't blow on the glue. It was miserable.

Kirk,

I hope a little sweat gets mixed into the glue...that way they can DNA your work in a 100 years to figure out if this was really made by THE KCC...and price it appropriately!
