I made a post back in August asking about the grain direction for a raised panel in a headboard. As you can see, I decided to run the grain horizontally. I wanted to utilize the 20" wide mahogany board I purchased in the best manner. A matching raised panel and matching construction was used on the footboard, albeit smaller in scale. The construction was fairly straightforward. I used mortise and tenon construction throughout. Mitered beads, front and back hold the raised panels in place. I used bolts to mount the bed rails to the head and footboards. I finished the bed with multiple coats of oil, shellac and paste wax.

Very Nice Kurt. I guess it really didn't matter which way you ran the grain on the headboard though, 'cause Ladies being Ladies and doing the "Interior decorating thing" they're known for, they always cover up the fine looking woodwork with Pillows anyhow. :D :D Glad you got the Pic Before the Decorating was complete. :)

Kurt, nice job! I like the height of the footboard. We have one that's a bit higher than this, and it's left it's fair share of lumbs and bumps on theighs and heads. Doah... Looks likes your's will be a bit safer.

I think you made the right choice to run the panel grain horizontally. It elongates the foot and headboards visually, adding an elegance. Really nice job.

Really great work. How fun/difficult was it to build compared to other things you've done?

Keith,

Thanks. I really like building canoes and kayaks the best. The kayaks take me about 6 months or so. When building one, I usually spend an hour or two in the afternoons and at least one full day on the weekends. I can knock out the wood work on the canoes and kayaks in a weekend or two. The last 10-15% of the work takes the rest of the time. Furniture projects obviously don't take as long. I have a short attention span and jump around from project to project. I have a bamboo flyrod that is 90% hand planed for over a year. I should finish that, but I'm about to start on a tiger maple end table.
