Found some "water candles" and decided to experiment with a holder. This is a very punky piece of Box Elder. The candles float and the wick holder is clear so you can see the wood on the inside. Next step is to turn one that is thin enough to be transparent when soaked in oil so the candlelight glows through the wood. Maybe even try some dyes for a sort of stained glass look.

There's a nice idea! I especially like the idea that you are going for translucence next. I have piles of candles/holders that have been waiting for an idea like that. Thanks Carole!!!:)

How neat. I love candles so this really peaks my interest.
I can just invision it with thinner walls and the light shimmering thru.. ahh.. I can't wait to see your picture of that ;)

Carol,

That looks really nice. I'll bet they would go over well at a craft show. I think I know what a water candle is, but would you explain it in a little move detail?

Thanks, Harry

Harry, a water candle consists of piece of thin, clear plastic that has a specially designed hole to hold a small wick. It floats on a thin layer of vegetable oil (NEVER use lamp oil!!!) which in turn floats on water. Since everything is transparent, the flame lights up the interior of the wooden holder.

Thanks, Keith. It is only buffed with tripoli and white diamond so far. No oil or anything else.

Ya know Carole...I meant to mention it earlier, but it looks like you've acheived some level of translucency in that piece as well....Or is that an illusion in the pic?

Thanks Carole. (Note that I spelled your name right this time.)

They sound really nice and without some of the restrictions of tea lamps. Got to try a couple of these. I guess using lamp oil could get really exciting!
