a friend is asking me to id this and i am at a loss, i was thinking maybe burly cypress at the root/trunk transition, or even sycamore - with some spalting - and someone else said it was "manzanita" and it is extremely rare this size and is worth over $10,000. thought i would toss it out to the experts in here for your thoughts.....

Don't know where you're located but that looks exactly like some spalted Box Elder Burl I've turned in the past. Very soft easy wood to work with if it is.

excellent input....box elder is a legitimate possibility. southeast texas - box elder range is nearby

How big is that, the stuff in the background makes it look enormous?
