For those in the Washington, DC area:
The Washington Woodworkers Guild will be co-hosting a Japanese Joinery Workshop with the Reston Community Center the weekend of October 3rd to 5th, 2014. Yann Gigučre of Mokuchi Studio (www.mokuchiwoodworking.com (http://www.mokuchiwoodworking.com)) will be joining us to lead a FREE Friday-night lecture that’s open to all plus an intensive weekend workshop ($200) that’s limited to 14 participants. There are still spaces available for the weekend workshop, so if you’re interested, see below for registration information.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Both the Friday night lecture and the weekend workshop will be held at the Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods, located at 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston, VA 20191.

FRIDAY NIGHT LECTURE:
Japanese Woodworking and Tools Seminar - Friday, October 3rd, 7pm to 9pm. (FREE and open to all)
In Friday night’s free lecture, Yann Gigučre will present the basic aspects of Japanese woodworking including the tools, methods, joinery and philosophy. He will demonstrate an overview of how to set up and use Japanese planes, chisels and pull saws and discuss basic joinery layout and cutting of some of the unique joinery found in Japanese woodworking.

WEEKEND JOINERY WORKSHOP:
Japanese Joinery in Furniture Making - Saturday, October 4th, and Sunday, October 5th, 9am to 5pm both days. ($200, including materials, limited to 14 participants)
For the weekend workshop, Mr. Gigučre will lead an intensive two-day exploration into the fundamental joints needed to create a variety of projects. Participants will focus on two of the core joinery techniques—mortise & tenon and the kanawa scarf joint—that are found throughout Japanese woodworking, from timber framing and shoji screens to cabinets and furniture.

Saturday’s class will explore the many variations of the mortise and tenon, a most fundamental woodworking joint. This will include blind, through, wedged, pinned, tusked, and fox mortise-and-tenon joints. Sunday’s course will focus on the iconic Kanawa joint, a standard scarf joint in the Japanese tradition, and will cover the layout, cutting, and several variations of this advanced joint. A tool list is available on the Community Center web site.
