I got a pickup load of 24 -30" dial Ash logs sawed to 26-30" length. I sawed them all down the pith and have them stacked under a tarp and soaker hose. Today I roughed out two bowl blanks, one 16" and the other 18":. They were from a crouch section that had some brown rot present. I managed to cut all of the punky wood out. During the turning, a red color developed on many parts of the clear white wood. It is beautiful and I would like to preserve it.
Does anyone know it this is typical of a fungal spalting, or some chemical reaction of something reacting with the atmosphere. Will it stay when I finish turn the bows? I have the bowls plastic bagged and will post photos after boiling tomorrow.
