Yesterday, I completed yet another tack trunk commission. In general, this one is similar to several in the past, but had some additional requirements around mobility. The client needed it to be able to move away from the wall to open the top trunk when it's in place at her barn because of some shelving that would interfere with the lid. In addition, she needed the top trunk to be able to be mobile so it can travel to away shows...that meant additional reinforcement in the carcass and building of a removable dolly to be used during those circumstances. This is black walnut over dyed birch. The laser cut appliqué was produced for me by our own Mike Null.

Jim

Really great work. I agree with the others, with a few slight modifications it would make a splendid tool chest for me.

...Are you getting them made quicker than the previous...

This one actually took a little longer because of the extra reinforcement and the mobility needs. I don't really go for "speed", however...for what folks are paying, I have to be more careful about quality. These tack trunks are "nicer" than many folks use. More typical is a basic cheap plywood box with standard corner molding on the edges, "Minwax" stains and poly and hardware store hardware. If they don't make them themselves, folks will pay $350-500 for that. What I make as shown goes for $1000-1200, depending on options. I only do a few of these in a year...it's not a business and I don't have time for that.

And yes, the general idea would work nicely for a "furniture grade" tool box setup! But I'd be doing primarily drawers for that purpose for obvious reasons.
