I am making a display case from walnut that will have a walnut and Plexiglas top. The top looks like a picture frame with 45 degree mitered joints at the corners. The Plexiglas will fit in a dado similar to what glass would on a picture frame. I plan to use hide glue for the mitered joints but what would be the best glue for the dado's?

Can't help with glue, but I would use retaining clips or glazing points, or similar. If I am understanding what you want to do.

I'd use a clear silicone caulk to hold the Plexi panels.

Silicone actually does not adhere well to acrylic. I know this because fish aquariums are a hobby. Silicone adheres well to glass but not plastics. There is actually a specific acrylic cement for this type of application, which chemically bonds the seams together. Kind of like PVC cement. Best of luck with it.

Methylene Chloride is what is in most products.

Agree w/ Rick --- you'll want the acrylic loose so that it can be replaced.

This is is the way to cement pieces together. Be aware that the glue will evaporate through the plastic bottle, so empty it back into the can.
I would use the clips in your application.

Charlie, thanks very much for posting this. I never think to check youtube and this will be very helpful to me as a reference!

Just my $.02. I don't know if this would be too much of an issue, but what are the expansion/contraction properties of Plexiglass compared to the wood? I am guessing anyway that you would not want to glue the plexiglass to the wood the same way you wouldn't want to glue in a raised panel. Silicon would hold it in place well enough, and still allow a little movement.

The original plexiglass was glued with chloroform, but I believe methylene chloride is proper for acrylic....
