When I started turning this piece I knew it had a bad spot that I thought would go away as I turned the base. But it went deeper than I thought and I started getting a ticking sound. I knew that couldn't be good and discovered a nail. Pull some out and thought I was good to go, but I encountered it again and broke off another piece. Encountered again as I got a little deeper, this time I took a chisel and went at it and finally exposed enough to pull it out with pliers, that piece was an 1" long. You can see where it was embedded in the first image.

What was interesting was the impact the nail had on the wood, one side looked like walnut and the other typical cherry.

Here's the results after coloring and finishing. Size is 7 1/4" x 31/4".

This is one of those pieces where the final images don't capture the real character of the wood, plus one is tilted but went with it anyway.

Comments are welcomed.

Thanks Robert. I used some green, rose like, blue and a little gold for highlights. The green and blue were knocked back with sandpaper.
