Wooden Plaque Shabby Chic

I need to make a wooden plaque for my companion with text on it....has anybody got any knowledge of making these and the most ideal approach to put the text on? other than normal painting?

Liza, if you go to a trophy store they can make an engraved plate to put on it. You can customize the shape if you want.
