...I think I am at least heading in that direction.

And this is just what I plan on keeping.

No combi planes? No 45, 55, or at least 50 goodness?
Not to mention a 98/99 pair, or a tongue and groove set.
You have not yet begun to collect!

Well that about covers every one.:)
. . . however . . .
Don't try to tangle me in your sinister web.
I have pretty much always said :

I have almost no use for my two jointer planes (though I like to look at them).
I can do about any bench planing work from a box to a dining table with the three planes shown (including thicknessing from rough and jointing the planks into one board).

PS: nice stable (of planes) you have there.
and
truth me known I have a whole bunch of planes just to have and admire them and fool around from time to time. Well I fool around more often than that . . . most of the time . . . actually . . .

I just realized . . .
you don't have ENOUGH hand planes (or you are hiding them in the closet)(that's the case here isn't it ? You got 'em but you aren't showing them).
Bevel up. You need jacks, jointers (to look at you understand), smoothers . . .
The little blocks are nice but there is a whole new world out there for you . . .
(or is it in your closet ?)

I like your little Stanley Bullnose. But I'll wager it does its best work posing for photos.

No coincidence. That light follows it around because it was once my plane.

haha :)

So far, the planes I use the most by far are my blocks. ESPECIALLY my three 60 1/2's. (Well...only on e is actually a 60 1/2.)

As far as the other planes you eluded to...well...they are actually in YOUR closet. I am just waiting on you to ship them to me! :D

Let me say this about that: To truly become a collector and not just an accumulator, you need to have decoy collections to through SWMBO off. You have to begin by having her accompany you whilst looking over stuff that you have you're eye one (but all the while, watching what she looks at). Then you start buying a few of those items, keeping them out for her to admire, while all the time, somewhere hidden away, the true treasures accumulate.

For me, it is plumb bobs. Wife loves them, and when in my shop, admires them. Gives me the ability to keep adding saws! Also, accumulate smaller items like stones. You can have a dozen dirty old stones piled in a corner that the fairer sex just ignore because of the oil, gooey mess (helps to have spider webs).

But the absolute best way to accumulate things is to never, and I mean never, comment about the every growing closet of shoes she buys. Just ignore brand names like Kate Spade, Nine West or Michael Kors, that appear on all sorts of goods in your house - because you know, that down in the shop, you;ve pulled a fast one in sneaking the $7.00 dollar stone into the shop AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW! (right).

Wow...It is very possible that you and I were somehow separated at birth...

My wife is actually "interested" in my handplane habit. Well, sort of. I mean, if I bring one in the house and show it to her, it doesn't take long before her eyes glaze over. She does, however constantly point out planes to me when we are out and about at antique stores or flea markets. She even seems disappointed when I tell her that I don't need yet another #4...

BTW...I would NEVER make mention of my wife's shoes.

EVER.

Mostly because I own in excess of 60 pairs of cowboy boots. :o

Yeah we can "claim" Dave (much as you would baggage at the airport). ;)

I do find it ironic that David (given his much celebrated and acclaimed hankering for stones) lives not too far from a place called Slippery Rock.

Coincidence? I think not.

Yeah, I grew up in central PA, though, and that's still where I do most of my antique shopping. Tony, you get around and liquidate my spots sometimes, though.

I've done pretty well on ebay since going nutty for washitas, though. And I like them, too - because I can hide them in a stone bench. But my bench is getting full.

I discarded all of my bench planes that don't get used fairly regularly, though - they take up serious space and they rust.

Yeah, I've never been to slippery rock, either. If there was a place called oily stone, I'd drive there and look around on the ground, though.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't live anywhere else but PA. Been all over the country and it is always great to get home. Great flea markets (Hazen, PA first weekend of September and Nitanny Tractor Show/State College, same weekend - both are great), tools in antique malls/stores and plenty of decent lumber dealers. Also can shoot deer & turkey off the back porch, and only one of the neighbors complains!

Yep. I'll probably pop into Hazen on Saturday. However, much closer to you and will be far more productive will be the absolute huge flea market at the Nittany Tractor Show in Centre Hall, PA. Starts on the Thursday before the weekend, ends on Sunday. I'm close enough to hit both, so I will, but for your distance, I would opt for Centre Hall. Once a year, held in conjunction with the tractor show. Lots of good rust, from many, many tools, to farm implements, old car stuff.

Oh well I guess there IS one there isn't there. Could use a few more. I'd sell off some of them funny things with all the layers and layers of springy metal clampy things so's you have room for the Bevel Ups.

I think you have too may planes. When I see a display like this, it is tempting to ask how many guys work in the shop. (In traditional shops each worker had four or five bench planes.) When you have too many tools, you lose the intimacy that is helpful for clean and efficient work.

If selling off half my tools would make my work cleaner or more efficient, I'd be smiling and on the way to the bank.

I can agree that having more tools isn't what makes one a better worker.

There is no need for another #4 or #5 plane in my shop. If one came along at a "can't refuse" price, it would likely be in my nature to buy it and save it for one of my grandkids or another person looking for a deal.

With the frequency and cheapness of certain types of tools in my locale, I have trouble passing them up. But I basically do as you (Jim) does: fix up and give away. For example vintage 60-1/2 block planes go for the $5 to $10 range. A decent #4 or #5 is $10 to $15. Handsaws abound around here for less than $5.00 for decent users. Hard to pass up, so I don't, if the tool has good bones and can be set up to use without a lot of fuss.

Oh...you have no idea!

As I mentioned, those are just the ones I was planning on keeping. I have three more (yeah...I said 3) #8's...that I am looking to unload, by the way.

Two of them are type 8/9's and they are ready to rock and roll. The other one is a tad older even (IIRC) and it needs a tad more work.

I use a LN #7 for practically every project. I suppose i don't need my coffee table to be within .003, but I'm happy that it is (or was when I built it). The dining table I built for my sister's wedding gift I think I left that at .010" end to end, but over 80" that looks pretty flat. Trying to get another .005" would be both fairly pointless and also incredibly difficult, but I digress.

I think my #4 and #7 are my favorite planes, I like the others but lean on these for everything precision, which is the fun part for me.

Winton Applegate
08-21-2014, 9:47 PM
#7s and #8s . . . for practically every project etc.

You guys must have shoulders like bowling balls from pumping all that iron.
I on the other hand keep my shoulders smaller by using smaller and lighter hand planes.

I can't fight the women off fast enough as it is.
So I nurture the one flaw in my frightening physique in the hopes I can get a little peace now and then from the near constant onslaught of female admirers.
