This is pretty cool. I'm not about to pry my Ipod open, but perhaps someone else here would be interested in doing so..

i don't know if I would pry one open either! Apple might like to see the work though!

According to the creator's notes, it's a 4th gen iPod, meaning it uses the touch-sensitive, non-moving "wheel". (The ones in use today)

That piece of wood on the dial looks awefully thick, but he claims it still picks up your finger motion. Hmm.. I'm a bit skeptical.

Aaron...The dial has to move over the touch wheel for it to work. The button also has to move. It can't work otherwise...I just tried to cover mine and make it work.

That's what I thought; so I guess that means his modification reverts back to where the wheel actually rotates. I think the non-mechanical interfaces is one of the neatest parts of the iPod and I wouldn't want to give that up.

That said, it's a beautiful job. Looking at some of the other electronics he's covered, I'm almost thinking it's just a good Photoshop job.. ;) He sure gets the curves down well seemingly without adding bulk to the electronics.

Here's another link regarding the construction. More info provided. Also, he says it's fully functional.
