Got a call from a nice lady losing her Oak a couple weeks ago. She wanted to have it "treecycled" into a new entry door, headboard and misc. tables . . .

The trunk weighed a little over 8000lbs . . .

Here's one of the quarters from the log on the mill . . .

Another shot for scale . . .

Here's what we found inside . . .

And another shot after Austin spilled his favorite beverage on it . . .

Scott, that's some beautiful wood! Quarter-sawn is really about the only flavor of Oak I really appreciate anymore and that will make some wonderful furniture.:) Hmmmm...I just don't know I'd have the patience to wait as long as it will take to dry it all!:D I'll certainly be looking forward to seeing the "recycled" tree!:)

Cutting for figure!! My favorite pastime.

It appears in the picture of the quartersawn section that the blade was pretty dull and the feed rate was pretty fast - there's a lot of "wave" in the face of the wood that faces down diagonally.

How many board feet did it yeild of 1/4 sawn material? Total? How did you get the bole up on the truck?

For you mission/craftsman furniture builders, Scott is a wonderful source for quartersawn oak with some awesome figure and ray fleck. Bring a big truck, you won't be able to resist buying some nice wood.

Todd,

Ahem, what you're seeing is curl--that cut is dead flat  as are all my cuts ('cept when we saw steel)

We haven't sawn the last quarter yet (keep spilling too many beverages) but we're already up to 900 bf and that's wasting off almost all the sap and a bit of the rift.

We just show up when the crane tells us to. Sometimes it's harder to get'em off the truck. In this case, we had to quarter it on the bed before we forked down each quarter individually. :)

Beautiful wood! I can't wait to see the tables and such you make from them.

Scott, this is the edge I'm referring too. In the picture, it looks crooked. Is that curl?

At a guess that would be the chainsawn edge from when he quartered the log on the back of the truck.
I can excuse that cut not being 100% straight ;)
He doesn't have a swingblade mill :D
Of course I can't do q/sawn boards as wide as that, so I guess he's still ahead

Todd,

It looks like a chainsaw cut from quartering the log. It was too big to throw it onto the mill and cut it whole :) Nice looking lumber there Scott!

Everything so far has been 10/4, 6/4 and 5/4. Maybe we'll saw some 1/4 tomorrow
