Wondering if anybody has any idea where one of these nice little tool bevel gauges (should be good for hollow back Japanese chisels) can be bought mail order? It seems they were made by Woodpeckers for Woodcraft, but signs are that they are not being stocked any more. Are they or something similar perhaps sold with somebody else's line of equipment? One for sale used?

I own one and I really like it. If you cannot find one, there are other options available.... For example, I own one of these

and one of these (http://www.smarttools.com.tw/products/Marking_Measuring/AngleChecker.html, but I probably purchased mine from Woodcraft or Lee Valley, not that I know for sure that they sell them).

I have never used this one, but it is less than $20 (Jet makes it)

You can also do some variation of holding the beveled edge flat on a surface and then measuring the angle that it makes. You can even use one of the many magnetic angle measuring devices. I think that mine is made by wixley (I used it last night to measure the angle of my table saw blade). Here is a picture of someone doing something like this while using a sharpening guide.

If you can put the blade to the angle you want, you can use pretty much anything to then measure that angle. Protractor, digital protractor, trigonometry, etc. Of course, with all these things at my disposal, I still prefer the measuring device that you show in your post (but the Jet device looks like it would work as easily).

Figured I might as well add a picture of the JET thing I referenced above.

Thank you very much Andrew, guys. Sorry not to have been clearer, but i guess i already have some of those alternatives, and can get the Jet item locally. Flat plate type gauges are not ideal on Japanese chisels with their hollow backs and chamfered sides. I have a Wixey, but it's a bit fiddly.

The Pinnacle gauge caught my eye because it has some horizontal width which will likely work well on these chisels, plus it's nice and simple. My trying to dig up exactly that type of gauge ro something similar is a bit of an indulgence...

I have one with the Pinnacle name on it. I love this thing. So, since you asked for one, perhaps now you can get one. :D
