I'm shopping for a tool roll to use when traveling. My longest tool is 26 1/2", and as far as how many tools I need it too hold, the answer is the same as the question "How many tools do you need?" Always more!

I've looked at a few options online, some interesting and some not worth the bandwidth to look 'em up. I'd like some real-world, hands-on input--what turning tool roll do you recommend, and why?

Thanks!

D.

Dan, I use this one (http://www.woodcraft.com/product/2005349/10916/woodcraft-turning-tool-roll.aspx) from Woodcraft. The quality is decent, though not truly heavy canvas. And, while it states 12 full size tools, much of that depends on the tool and the diameter of the handles. It is a tight fit for some of mine, but I find it to be a handy item. I do like the straps - they snug up tightly.

As I recall, I got it in a promotion and did not shop around. There may be other and better sources.

Checkout foam lined rifle/pistol cases at local hunting supply store - Academy Sports & Outdoors, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, etc. They are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Should be able to find one that handles quantity and size of tools you want to carry. Hard size cases protects you and others from sharp tools. Canvas tool roll not as effective. - John

I bought one from Woodcraft a few years ago. The green colored canvas is reasonably good and it has about a dozen pockets for tools. On the negative side, the pockets are a tight fit for the handles of full sized Sorby, Crown, Taylor and other tools. If you put tools in every pocket, there is no possibility of being able to roll them up. You are limited to about six tools if you want to actually roll them up.

I use a tripod bag to carry 7-8 tools to hands-on sessions or demo's, none are 27" long though. You can add a foam tip to the tools to keep them from banging together. It has a nice carry strap for over the shoulder and it is padded.

I have this one and have been very happy with it. I have found I can carry more than 6 with no problem. I have some longer tools and the handles project a little but it's no big deal.

Try arrow case's I use them when I travel, there hard, nice handle, long enough for a Ellsworth Crown gouge and not really expensive. The case holds I believe about 8 tools and I think they were $ 14.99 each.
Oh ya I got them at Dick's Sporting Goods.
