A non-woodworking friend gave me some scraps so I made one of Gary Rogowski's "Small Elegant Boxes" (http://www.startwoodworking.com/sites/startwoodworking.com/files/rogowskibox.pdf). The box is obviously red oak, but does anyone know what species the lid is? The finish is an oil/varnish blend.

I do believe that's ash, top and sides.

Sides are definitely oak.

Are you positive ? I mean, if you're positive, you're positive. I've only got a picture and you've got the real thing.

Looks like oak. Feels like oak. Smells like oak. I have not tasted it. Yet.

Top looks like cherry to me. Sides like red oak

Sides are 100% oak. I am sticking with birch for the top.

I agree with Danny....birch for the top and oak for the sides.

Top looks like cherry to me.

Agree - that was what came to mind when I first saw it. If you have a scrap left over, cover half of it and stick it in the sun for a couple of hours. That will rule it in / out as a possibility.

Smelling is telling. Taste is not necessary.

Looks like cherry to me. Keep it out in the sun for a couple days. If it gets darker, the likelihood that it's cherry over birch increases.

The grain pattern on the top looks almost exactly like the first humidor I built and it was cherry, so that would be my vote.
