My thinking is that the whole edge on an oval top is really end grain. The reason for the question is that we all know how end grain takes dyes and stains differently than edge and face grain. I am trying to determine where to start the treatment of the end grain so It does not look blotchy.

Like I said I think the entire edge is really end grain on and oval top.

Your thoughts?

Nope. Like a round top - the quadrants define end grain and side/edge grain. Transition from one to the other in between. No way to get a perfect delineation, AFAIK - just wing it, and try to make the transition with sealer/dye is what I do.
