This Birch burl box measures about 5" across and 3" tall. The red rings on the lid are Padauk and the cabochon is a 1.5" Malachite natural stone.

Beautiful Ed. I love what you did with the stone and the padauk. What was your procedure for that inlay?

Thanks John. Its really very simple...turn the lid outside perfectly flat and then glue a thin round of contrasting wood onto it using medium-thick CA on one part and accelerator on the other...press them together for a few seconds and you're ready to finish the lid.

A very pleasing turning Ed. The birch burl is outstanding, and the accents really set it off.

The birch burl is rather difficult to find where I live, but I am always on the lookout.

Love that box, Ed. I love all boxes. Particularly like the wonderful little detail in the bottom inside of the box. How does the lid sit on the body of the box. I am not quite able to see how it fits... Great job! :)

Beautiful job, Ed. Just one question. I've been buying my cabs from CSUSA - Do you have a better/cheaper source???

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and generous welcomes to this group.

Here are two suppliers I've used for inexpensive cabochons:

http://www.firemountaingems.com/fctdgems.asp ...you'll have to study each cab type carefully as the rounds are mixed in with oval shaped ones. Check out the “Mountain Jade” for big (38mm) round colored stones.

http://www.siwonline.net/main.html ...this guy goes to a lot of gem and rock shows throughout the country and carries some great inventory.

The lid on this Birch box fits snugly with a 1/8" male lip in the base.
