Early last month my former boss asked me to make a gavel from one of the oak trees from our high school that was destroyed by the tornado that hit Joplin in 2011. His plans were to use the gavel at the school board meetings. This was my first effort at making a gavel and striker. I used a ratio that Brian Brown gave me—gavel head is 1.7x the diameter and the handle is 2.6x the length of the head. The head is 3 3/16”L x 1 7/8”D, the handle is 8 ½” x ¾” and the striker is 4” x 11/16”. I was really pleased with the spalting in the piece of oak that I used. The end of the handle is pretty plan. If I were to make another one, I think I would do some beads or something at the end. Thanks everyone for your earlier input. C&C welcome.
