Hello,
I am cutting out shapes, and want to apply a colored layer top on the acrylic before I cut them.
I can of course lay the colored material afterwards and cut out the shape by hand, but I remember someone mentioning an alternative to vinyl. I have used polyester, but can only find a few metalic colors.
Anyone here remember?

Could you just spray paint, then cut?
I also saw this:
Copper, bronze, gold, nickle,

Here is an alt to Vinyl that is made to go in the laser. You will need to find a local "laserables" supplier
LASERABLE SERIES - LASER ULTRA THINS

You can get virtually ANYthing in vinyl- color-shift metallic colors, wood, carbon fiber, polished chrome & brass, sandblast-frost, reflector, heavy metalflake, hologram designs, rainbow-mirror, and any plain color you can imagine?
So- I'm curious as to why you'd like an alternative? :)

A lot of vinyls contain Chloride Kev, alternatives are safer I guess :)

Yes, vinyl contains PVC and can destroy your machine and any life inhaling the fumes when cut, but a few pieces applied to acrylic with the transfer tape left on won't do damage. If it's a large quantity I;d definitely find an alternative. Krylon Fusion works, though I prefer to spray with One-Shot. For metallic I use the powders (actual metal) mixed into One-Shot waterborne clear then sprayed.
