This is a soft maple NE bowl 7" x 2.5" high, 3/8 thick. This one also has the rays going perpendicular to the growth rings. Although, I call it natural edge, it was run through a Nicholson A6 ring debarker, so maybe it is a debarked natural edge.

You guys on the UP sure get some pretty maple. Great job sowing it off.

That's really nice - and interesting wood. I would call it natural edge. Just not a "bark" edge

No, this was not branch wood. This was a burl on the side of the log. When we start to cut logs in the sawmill, we cut the outer slabs off and the go to the chipper operator. He pulls slabs off the conveyor if they have burls and cuts burls out of them. He saves them for us.

Thank you for the compliments. I tried something different with the finish. I dilute wipe on poly with naphtha - about 40% naphtha. It is probably thinner coat but it is easier to work with.

That is a nice barkless natural edge piece. Some pieces are supposed to hold on to their bark, and some give it up pretty easy. What is a "Nicholson A6 ring debarker"? Seeing some pieces with the bark "fastened or repaired" is like seeing a bad hair toupee.

Thomas, a Nicholson A6 ring debarker is a large piece of machinery used for volume debarking. It can debark at a maximum rate of 125 feet per minute. We use it for the sawmill where we debark up to 1800 logs in 8 1/2 hours which equates to about 81,000 board feet of hardwood lumber.
