:confused: I bought this at an antique store for $2 this weekend, making a new iron and wedge wont be bad at all, using it correctly is another story. Anyone know what this plane is used for? I couldnt find anything in Whelans book. Thanks for any help.

Looks like a late 19th/early 20th. C. plane. Possibly modified to cut a specific dado. You could possibly clamp a straight edge on the piece of wood,and run the plane along it. With no nickers,it would be well to deeply scribe or saw the edges of the dado first. Deep enough to prevent the edges from splintering when the planing starts.

I agree with George, it looks like a rabbet plane that has been modified.

It could also be used to make rabbets to a set depth.

How wide is the base?

It is 13/16" at the cutter. I thought about the fixed depth dadoe but wasnt sure why not just use a dadoe plane instead? It looks factory but might be home brewed.

That's 1/16th more than a true 3/4" thick sheet of plywood.

I would use it as the more knowledgeable intimated above;
to cut dadoes for shelves in the side or bookcases or dresser cabinets.

With a batten tacked on either side, this looks like it could go for miles.

I particularly like the brass strips that were installed.
This was meant for the long haul.
