My latest project is this old Pie Crust End Table. This is an old family heirloom that belonged to my wife's family. This was one of those "one-of-these-days projects"! We hauled it from Oregon to Florida, and back to Washington, as before I finally got around to restoring it.

The table was constructed using Mahogany veneer plywood. The veneer may have been sanded before, as one side was extremely thin, and the back was peeling away. The scallop molding around the top was damaged beyond repair.

Using the term restoration does not really apply to this project! All the sides have been re-veneered, the plywood top was replace with solid Maloney, the scallop moldings were replaced, and the decorative corner braces were re-veneered. Now I know why Norm makes a dimensioned copy of a piece, and builds his version from the drawing.

This is my 3rd furniture restoration project. The previous projects include my Grandparents Dresser (http://home.comcast.net/~kc7cn/antiquedresser/), and the Dumpster Dresser (http://home.comcast.net/~kc7cn/dumpsterdresser/).

Thanks for looking.

Wow! Before and after is like night & day. You really did it favors by taking off the paint. I have an old butler table "in process" where I had the same problem. After stripping off the old heavy stain, I was with a botched up/patched surface where I couldn't just re-stain. Re-making isn't an option, so I will just spray with black lacquer and move on.

Thanks for the nice comment Russ. This was the first time working with Mahogany - It's nice material, but Oak and Walnut are my favorites.

I particularly commend you on matching the old and new wood. I take it the legs are original.

Carl,

The legs are original; they did not need a lot of repair. I save as much as possilbe. You always learn something when you tackle a project like this.
