Here is a recent #51 spokeshave find compared to one from an earlier purchase:

290050

Not having thought about this much there wasn't much research looking into it. After looking it up in John Walter's book it says the early #51s used an eye screw to tighten the cap.

Maybe mine is a Frankenspokeshave!

It seems to work fine.

You've got some cools stuff in that photo. I enjoyed the awl and file and your rule as well as the spoke shaves.

Is the screw to bow the blade maybe ?

Just the usual stuff on the bench during a project.

The top screw give the leverage to the cap against the iron.

Without the top screw all the leverage is supplied by a little bump on the back of the cap. Somewhere there is likely a #58 spokeshave running around with a lever cap with an eye screw or thumb screw at the top it isn't supposed to have.
