Laser Power Question

I have just acquired an 80W machine and was playing around trying to familiarize myself with its operation...setup a simple text... "Sweet Home Alabama" in Corel to laser a piece of printer paper. The machine SW driver recommended 8% power at 100% speed. It actually took 20% at 100 speed to get results i.e. a light brown scorching of the text . This does not feel right to me....What say you?

It all depends upon the paper. I have had some paper turn color at less then 10% while other thicker paper can take around 24% to mark.
