So a couple months ago (maybe more) I picked up a pretty worn Richardson Bros 10" back saw:

Sad, huh? I reset the back a bit, as the spine was bashed down on the toe pretty bad. Polished up the plate a bit. Made a new handle. Ended up here:

(The handle is more sculpted than appears, though I'm thinking about hitting it some more with the rasp, now as I'm looking at it...)

Anyway, bought the files and sundry necessary to sharpen the thing. Last night, I started in by attempting to joint the teeth. Have the Veritas jointer file holder thingy. The handle was installed at the time, and the file was rubbing against the wood, messing things up. To counteract this, I was bearing down pretty hard on the file, with minimal results. You guessed it - file slid off the end of the saw and I buried the toothline into the heel of my palm. Drat. Retreated for a bit, but was able to joint the teeth, mostly, by the end of the night.

The toothline on this saw is, frankly, all cattywhompus. All over the place. Jointing removed almost all of some teeth, almost none of others. I didn't want to completely remove them, so I stopped and figured I'd shape and rejoint as many times as necessary. Got home from work today, grabbed a file, and started:

Now, I'm sure I'm messing up angles, or count, or a host of other things. And I know filing a rip saw is not at the challenging end of the tool fettling spectrum. But this is incredibly gratifying! It's calming, and too much fun.

Okay, back to work.

Looks great Scott.

For me it is more about adjusting the feel than the look. The handle should not be fighting with my hand.
