At about ten minutes til noon, I was reading new notes on SMC and, lo and behold, the ground shook. At first I thought it was the cats thundering by, but they had never had the effect of windows rattling. My wife came in from outside and said that the large windows in the back were still shaking.

So far, no news about anything anywhere else. We are about 50 miles NE of Sacramento off of US 80.

Finally saw some stuff on the new about this...knocked a few items off the shelves in stores and frazzled a few nerves but that was about it.

A 4.8 50 miles away, come on. :p

A 5.5 next door is where it starts to get interesting, and then it is mostly a wake up followed by a yawn. ;)

Oh yeah, as the crow flies, I am only 8.5 miles from the L-P epicenter. :p

Of course, the Northridge quake was a thrust quake whereas the L-P was a slip strike, so I didn't have my ceiling coming at me at 1,000 mph, just my bed (napping) moving from under me at 1,000 mph.

Whether they're moving up, down, or sideways, objects at 1,000 mph are faster than they appear. Definitely no fun in any direction, but it does make for some interesting stories to tell. In my case the damage was limited to some broken glass and dishes, along with a very shaken up (literally and figuratively) dog.

And I think Lee has us all beat. At least our earthquakes were over in 30 seconds or so, instead of 5 minutes. After about 2 or 3 minutes, you gotta wonder if it'll ever end.

Chris

Do you per chance have a piece of 3/4" dowel, any species, about 4" long I could acquire?
