I was curious where everyone typically installs the full extension drawer slides; on the bottom, middle, etc... of the drawer? I have always centered them on the height of the drawer sides, but wondered if they would be better if mounted closer to the bottom? Any recommendations/guidance?

I do the center of the slide 1" up from the bottom edge of the drawer.
The slides on the cabinets go 1 1/8" up from the opening.
I usually run my drawer sides over the table saw scoring them about 1/16" or so deep 1" up from the bottom edge along the side and use that to mount the slides.
It's just enough of a groove to start the screws and keeps the slides in a straight line.

Sorry, I use bottom mount slides.

What a great idea, I'll steal that.

I love these Kreg jigs. Both compliment each other, and they will do either side mount or bottom.

So far as I know, the only sense in which it matters is if the drawer is solid wood. Then with seasonal expansion and contraction, the placement of the slide will affect how much of the change is seen in the top and bottom clearances of the drawer. Slide at the center, they change the same. Slide at the bottom, almost all of the change is at the top.

You do not want your screws in the dado that the bottom rides in.

I wish I had done that before assembly! Now I am gonna try to use my router table and a 1" bit for the drawer slides. Not only will it help me with the width problem, but also helps to locate the slide on the drawer to ensure they are at the right height! Thanks! Hopefully I can get some time tomorrow to try it out.

Matt, I have both of them. I found that the one that held the slides would deflect while drilling. I was using them with the cheap white euro slides though so that may be part of the problem?

I've used various places over the years, but recently tried even with the bottom of the drawer and I think I'm going to stick with that. I experimented with a quick and trashy disk sander stand and was pleased as the ease of putting things where they needed to be.

I often score the boxes after they're assembled.
I don't put the fronts on until the cabinets are installed.
Are the drawers to wide?

John,
The drawers are about 1/16 to 1/8 too wide. the drawer front is attached. I should just start building drawers as simple boxes and then attach front once installed. Would make things easier eh?

It doesn't matter.

^^^^^^this.

Put them wherever it is easiest to align them. I usually make a jig - couple pieces of scrap nailed at 90*, to get a consistent alignment up from the bottom.

My only concern is to not mount them with the screws too close to the dado for the bottom.
