Recently I bought a small lot of tools off the bay and included in that lot was a 48. After a little de-rusting and sharping the irons I took it for a test drive. First fit was to tight, second was getting there, third was just fine. Nice simple plane that will get used and appreciated. If you guys don't have one (one similar) I encourage ya to pick one up. Stanley also made a smaller sister to this tongue and groove plane, a 49.

Was wondering, do ya think a 48 (with a few slight modifications, like a +¼" cutter and slip fence) could be little closer to a 49?

Maybe a 48½ or 49½ depending on Stanley's numbering system.

I don't know if you could finagle it to work or not, but it'd be easier to just get a 49. It's worth having both.

That's funny. You said 'Stanley' and 'numbering system' in the same sentence. That can't be right. :D
