Apparently this is wood ID day. I bought 2 grab bags of pen blanks for $8 each at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago, and these were in one of the bags (my wallet took a much more severe beating than $16). I don't know what kind of wood this is, but it has the tightest and most consistent curl I have ever seen in wood. The best I can figure is that it might be curly Hawaiian koa. Does anybody have another guess, possibly more educated. I don't know if this helps, but they were likely purchased at a Woodcraft store. Nearly all of the other woodturning items at the sale had Woodcraft price tags on them.

that's pretty tight curl. Koa's a good guess.
It might also be curly mango. That stuff can have incredibly tight figure.
Also possibly some kind of gidgee, an australian group of Acacia species. maybe ringed gidgee?

Yup. It's curly Koa. Nice blanks.

I agree with highly figured Koa. And......just to make you feel good about your purchase, was on Kauaii a few weeks ago looking at highly figured Koa. This guy had a 2"x 12" x 24" board for $850!!!! That's $212.50/BF!! I left it on the Island.
