For prototype #2 I did a four axis (one centered, three offset) that is about the same size as the five axis I did earlier.
I then sat down to do prototype #3, trying some differences on the cutting, which didn't work out at all, so I tossed the blank in the firewood bin.
I then setup to try something another one. Got it all rounded and then had to head into the house and cycle the laundry.
I then went back out to try another different approach, only to forget that I had the lathe set for 1800 rpm, rather then the 700 to 800 I had been turning the off-set axis at

The result was a box blank launched across the shop and a bent mandrel.
Fortunately I always stand someplace else then "down range", when I first turn on the lathe

Glad you were out of the line of fire. How much offset did you use and what is the size of the piece?

the bent mandrel is amazing..glad you have learned to stay out of the firing line.

Now you can really do some different off center work with that bent mandrel. Michael

Thomas, 11/16 and the chunk was about 2(dia)by 3.

Would have been just fine if I had turned the lathe down, 700 to 800 works well.
