I finally found a 45 w/blades.:D The man says it is in pristine condition. I really hope it is. He priced it at a buck and a quarter, and I really hope that is a good deal for what I'm getting. How about letting me know? Will have pics tomorrow afternoon. I have purchased from him before and he always has good tools. Please advise.
Thanks,
Joe

Condition and completeness means a lot if price matters. If it's got all of its blades and especially if it's got good orignial boxes for the blades and a good original box for the rest, you'll be fine. Either way, if it works well and you use it, then it'll be even better than fine.

At $1.25 you could make money selling off the hardware.

Any more comment will have to wait for pictures.

I'm still deeply saddened that a 45 that I spotted on CL with most of the cutters for only $75 got away from me. Made arrangements to have a look at and got a call back him saying he couldn't find it so he called his wife to find out where it was. I guess the wife had neglected to mention that it had already sold, the husband had posted it from photos taken earlier.

Wishing you good luck! If you use it I'm sure it'll be worth every penny.

Jim,
That's $125.00 the fellow is asking. He really has for the most part nice tools to sell. I really don't think it will hurt me at that price, but I will check it closely.

As long as it's in good condition with all of the commonly missing pieces present, you should be ok. I paid 157 for mine with all of the cutters, boxes, manual, in near mint condition(eveything but the box) on ebay. No screw driver but I have a few of those. Ive only sharpened and used 6 or 7 of the blades, but I like it. Do you have any pictures of it?

I'm not going to say how little I paid for my best 45, that was complete and virtually unused, but it was much, much less than $75 and that included a Stanley 71 that the auctioner failed to mention that was also in the box. If you get one, really take the time to learn how to use it. For example, there is a reason why you need to use the skate and long rods when plowing a 5/8" groove. In another thread (maybe here or elsewhere), I mentioned the LV is also an excellent choice for a plough plane.

I happen to have (3) 45's and in retrospect, am glad that I bumbled into my first one a decade or more ago.

I had no idea what a Stanley 45 was, so I Googled it... that's a purty machine right there!

Greatest Steam Punk tool a woodworker could ever want, excepting its cousin the Stanley 55.

They're loads of fun for us hobbyists (but could be pretty stifling to those who make a living with hand tools).

287590287591287592287593This is what I picked up today. OK have at it! Was it good or not? Please be as kind as you can. It is a Stanley Rule & Level Co. circa 1900 type 10, 11, 12. The long arms and one box of blades are missing.

You did alright. Wooden box and pamphlet look original.

For the parts missing, drop an email to Patrick Leach/Superior Works. Don't know what blades you're missing, but you do want the long rods.

Looks like it is only missing the slitter and the long rods. The slitter isn't that necessary unless it is one of the functions you need for cutting window blinds. Like Tony said, the long rods are something you will want or need and you did alright on the price.

The images are not clear enough to tell if it is a type 8 or type 9. It doesn't look like a type 7 with just 45 inside of an oval.

Type 8 has a leaf pattern on the fence part from the rod to the part that rides on the work. Type 9 is fairly plane. Type 10 loses the floral pattern on the main body.

That single box of cutters is correct for that plane. Should be 20 cutters.

Dig around in the box and you may find the slitter. I removed mine from the 45 I use, as it can leave cuts when you plow deep (don't ask). I don't think I ever used it, either! But get the long rods.

I believe St. James Tool offers slitters as well as other parts, but use the plane for a bit to see if it is "your cup of tea". Late yesterday, I ran some 3/8" beading on a couple of pieces far quicker than you could using a powered router, and without the "ripples and burns" that are the result of said router.

Actually I think you have the correct parts for a type 8.

That actually does look very clean. How is the chrome along the top of the main body?

This could actually be in the area of collector quality if that means anything. Just makes it a bit nicer to use if you ask me.

Here's a pic of the top of the main body. It does have a little rust which can be gently buffed off by hand.287690
