About 5" diameter x 3 1/2" tall. Jacarada with woodburning inspired by Navaho pottery piece that I purchased at a Florida PowWow.

For a first attempt at feathers, I think they came out rather well. There is an optical effect where when you juxtaposition a light and dark area the light area will look lighter and the dark area darker. This, when viewed at the right angle as in the last picture, gives an impression that the top is lighter than the body. The first picture shows that this is not so.

Finish is Krylon clear satin acrylic, rubbed with 0000 steel wool to remove any gloss.

As always C&C welcome.

Thom, you did very well on the burning. I'm really impressed with the feathers and the shading that you did. Not sure if it is the picture or even if it was planned. Looks like the foot curves back out a little. Great job over all. Keep up the good work.

Steve, it does flare out just a tiny bit. I wanted just a bit more lift and was afraid I had hollowed about an 1/8" too low, so I flared it when I removed the tenon to lower the bottom but keep the curve leading into it.

The piece is a bit under 1/4" thick.

I really like the curves on the stretched skin drum head. Very realistic.

Nice Thom, the simple but elegant burnings accent the piece perfectly, very pleasant and interesting to look at.

Thom, this is a superb turning! The feather detail is very well done and accents the form nicely. But the form itself is so sweet that I almost wish you had not embellished it!

Thanks David. But a bad piece would still be a bad piece even with great embellishment. I feel about that kind of like John Jordan said about fixing cracks. A cracked piece is still a cracked piece, so why bother?

A club member brought in a vase last night that he had done some piercing on at the top. the vase was about 6" diameter and 8" tall. The piercing was very well done, the rim thin, but the pot itself was thick, and the bottom half conical with no curve. He liked it, and I guess that counts but I would not have wasted the time on the piercing....
