Some 15 years ago I rough turned a bunch of Black Cherry bowls, that were after drying in the usual brown paper bag way, got placed on some shelves I had put up in my shop, to high to get easily at, and so when we moved to Atikokan these forgotten bowls moved with all the other bowls to the new place.

The first picture shows the bowl as it was sitting in my London shop.

Now this particular bowl really bothered me, as it had a shape that just irked me, luckily I had left the wall thick enough to be able to return it into a more acceptable shape, so returned it a couple of weeks ago and then finished it with Polymerized Tung oil from Lee Valley, it sat for about two weeks while we went for a visit to my son in Ottawa, back in Atikokan I hand-rubbed it with synthetic steelwool then polished it.
Found a new owner even before it was finished, has to be a popcorn bowl, I’m sure it can do that ;)

Comments welcome :)

That is a beauty Leo! I especially like the flared out rim, and the thin [ish] walls; and the base is a nice addition as well..........gotta love that grain in the black cherry......makes for a classy looking but utilitarian form. Glad to see you turning and posting!

Leo, Folks who turn a lot of cherry can attest to how difficult a scratch free finish is to achieve. This one looks perfect. Great simple shape. The flared rim makes the bowl.

Now that's a nice size popcorn bowl. Lots of volume and thick enough to keep the kernels warm. Great workmanship on a wonderful species of turning wood. Nice pile of rough outs also. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all you guys for the replies and comments :D , Doug you haven’t seen my stash of rough turned bowls, Jak yes my weakness for sure, Quinn I was just there, bought a new Ford Expedition YOO HOO, Steve roughly counted them last year when I moved them all to our new place here, there where about 1000 plus some blanks/logs as well as bags full of offcuts :D (you can see some of them below the shelves in the storage unit)

I should show a few pictures of them stored to give you some idea of it.

You know Doug over here it goes something like this, when I even look at some wood or comment on a tree that I see the possible bowls in that I could get out of,....... You don’t need any more wood, you got enough already , O well I can’t say she is wrong, but I still sneek the occasional small piece in the car, last time I found some Apple in my son’s wood pile, I just love Apple to turn, and so ................... yup I got some more wood again :D :D

Leo,
I always like your bowls. They are always well designed with great tool control and wonderful finishes and this Cherry bowl is no exception.

:D Thank you Ken, I do try, not a production turner and so the outcome is important, I’ve said this before, but yes, I do believe that loving what you do does show in the end :)

Good looking bowl Leo. Judging by the size of the fan blades in the first picture it should make a great popcorn bowl

Thank you Rick :), yes the bowl is just a hair under 12”, plenty big enough for one man’s popcorn I’d say :D
