Recently completed these two oak bowls. The first turning is 7 7/8"W x 4"H. It was turned from a limb cap and thus has some interesting grain pattern. The second turning is 10 1/2"W x 3"H. As you can see the wood had a lot of cracks in it so I filled them with Inlace turquoise. Both were dipped in a blend of oils and then Bealle buffed once dry.
C&C welcomed.

Nice job on both, the one with Inlace must have been a little scary when spinning.

Very scary for sure. Needs one of your bowties or two.

Just to let you both know, I started filling the cracks before I even started turning.

Dennis and Robert--because there were so many cracks, and wanting to keep the blank from exploding, I started filling the cracks early--translate before I started turning. I first enlarged the cracks to enable the Inlace to go easily into the cracks. I used the granular form and simply "poured" it into the cracks. I used a dental pick to help pack it into all of the voids in the crack. Once filled I used thin CA (EZ Bond 5 cps-red label) to slowly saturate the Inlace. I tried to make sure that the CA went all the way thru the Inlace. Once this was accomplished I used medium CA to fill in all of the surface voids. As I continued the turning, I would stop and repeat the process as needed to ensure that the bowl did not explode.
Thanks for asking and looking.
