Been cooking Steak and Hamburgers for years, the last 7 years I have been into some serious BBQ (if there is such a thing) I have slowed down a bit but came very close to competition BBQ.

Currently own about 10 different cookers. The most versatile for me is the Big Green Egg. Anybody else enjoy cooking a big Pork Shoulder for 16 Hours?

Mmmm. Those pictures got my mouth watering for some good BBQ! It's too hard to look at the photos and keep my tummy from growling.

I have BGE for last two years, the best grill/smoker I ever used. I even start doing cold smoking in BGE - mmmmm:D

Curious... why the umbrella?

I bought my first real smoker last summer. (had the $35 Wal-Mart years ago that I could never really figure out, always too dry or still partially uncooked) we had a blast with it. Ribs, pork tenderloins, but the family favorite has been the bacon explosion. I may invest in an egg this year...

The BGE has quite the following, I am more of a Weber guy myself..Had a Smokey Mountain for 10 years and it worked well enough, but after futzing around with it and trying out smoking Pork Butts (shoulder) on a standard Weber 22.5 kettle indirect with water underneath, it works about as well.

Your Pork butt has a nice mahogany color all it needs is some nice eastern Carolina vinegar-ketchup base sauce on it..

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your post. I currently have several cookers (OK Joes offset, Brinkman vertical smoker, Charbroil grill) and have recently been very intrigued by the BGE. I love the quickness of my grill for hamburgers, steaks, etc. but am considering the BGE for the long-term items like pork butts, briskets, and ribs. Is it true that the long-term cooks don't require a lot of babysitting?

Curious... why the umbrella?

It does not rain much here but it was that day so the umbrella keeps the water from going into the cooker. I now have a flue cap I adapted to fit on the top, looks a lot better.

I do a lot of ABT's, Peppers stuffed with Cheese and wrapped in Bacon.

What is Bacon Explosion?

I bought my first real smoker last summer. What did you buy?

Is it true that the long-term cooks don't require a lot of babysitting? Thanks, Once you understand how the Egg works you can get it locked in on a temp and it will stay there for hours. Use a good quality Lump charcoal, never any lighter fluid. I bought a weed burner to lite mine. There is a device that connects to the Egg and many other cookers that is computer controlled, it just pushes air into the cooker to maintain the desired temp, I do not own one and have great success in doing long cooks with little tending.

I have done Pizza, Cookies, Burgers and Vegetables, just about anything you can cook in an oven it will handle.

I have a Lang's 60 inch smoker and a Bradley electric. I can do 6 brisket and 4 pork shoulder at one time on the Lang's. I also smoke meatloaf and brined turkey breast.

What are the other 8 cookers?

I'm lazy--I use a Cookshack electric. Near brainless operation, I can leave it unattended, and it turns out great BBQ.

Apologies Alan, I missed your question somehow.

I bought an inexpesive model from Master Forge. I went to a few of the smoker forums and read a ton of reviews, and for the entry level smoker, (had to see if the family would enjoy it) the master forge won hands down. So I picked one up and really like it. Easy to use and easy to clean. Definitely works better than the smoker box for my gas grill.
