There are a few diferent whale watch boats going out of P'town at the east end of the Cape. They don't have to travel far as the whales are often times visible from the shore..... 1/4 mile or more off. Provincetown is a good take in itself. I am not familiar with whale watch opportunities from other ports, but I imagine that there are several.

Try this if you already haven't....http://www.discovernewengland.org/new-england-activities/whale-watching/

Just be aware that some "whale watch tours" will guarantee that you will see whales or give a refund. They will also count dolphins or porpoises which are closely related, but are not whales so they don't have to refund part of your tour money.

It is also at the tail end of one of the most brutal drives, in July.

As mentioned above, there are no guarantees associated with whale watching,
and I would check on cancellation policies due to inclement weather.

I would recommend trying your luck at this in the Narragansett bay of Rhode Island,
during your Newport stay. It's not likely to be so crowded, and the access is easy.

If the fine print says "reschedule only" you're stuck.
(Unless they relocate to the other side of The Atlantic.)

For example:

(No mention is made of cancellation policy, and I've learned to have that in writing.)
