i am having trouble identifying some would i just purchased. it is mostly molding. the previous owner called it "calvea", he said it was from Costa Rica. I can't find anything on the Interweb. It seems kind of orangy. ring a bell for anyone?

I'm leaning towards one of the "mahogany" varieties. Not swietna.

I think what you have there may be called different name I know it as Apitong.Its used for trucking beds for commercial trucking because it's so dense and hard wearing.
I have a piece it kinda a has a nice spicy smell when cut.
It's a interesting wood very stable but hard on tools and doent like to be hand planed.Thats all I got.Hope it helps Andrew

If it's molding, it doesn't have to be dense or hard wearing, it needs to hold a machine tool profile well.

I don't see a lot of moldings made from expensive sources.

Yea. I think you may be right Jim. I was hoping it was expensive. Andrew, thanks for the response, it doesn't really have a smell, and it seems medium density. Although I have a couple of other pieces I need to identify that match your description, I will look at those next.
