I have been into DIY speaker and home theater building for years. I used a lot of MDF and various plywood. I have decided to advance my knowledge into true woodworking. A kitchen renovation and a 25 year old house to update pushed me over the edge.

Saturday I drove to a sawmill mill in TN and bought 324ft of cherry for $1 bdft. The guy told me they have a hard time selling cherry and it has been sitting for over two years, so I bought all of it. My wife and I jointed and planed a raw board and simply were amazed of how "ugly" boards were transformed into beautiful wood. I am toally hooked now and the boss (aka wife ;) ) is really for me to build some cabinets.

Congratulations on your lumber find, and on your discovery of the joys that are part of lumber preparation. I can still remember my excitment the first time I cleaned up some rough lumber. The funny thing is that it never seems to go away!

Cherry is 'spensive out here in Cali....

Now redwood and (claro) walnut is quite reasonable. Big-leaf maple from Oregon is good, too.... :)

I got 200 BF of air dried cherry for $120.00 the year before last. Also got 150bf of cherry from a dead tree in my yard band-sawed for $22.50 by the same guy.

What sawmill in TN did you go to? Where is it? I am always looking for good hardwood sources here in Huntsville. Thanks.

Erine I will PM you. Although I am not affiliated with the sawmill I do not want to violate the forum rules and promote a wood dealer.

James,

You would not be violating the forum rules by giving the sawmill information out.
Since you are not affliated with the mill - please supply the name

As requested:

Davie Ashley Sawmill
411 Limestone Rd
Elora, TN 37320
931-937-8581 or 931-937 –6634

They do have a klin and the price I recieved on the cherry was probably due to being air dried and been sitting for a while. Faye is the office lady and real nice lady. If she says she will call you back - you can bank on it. :D

i have a friend here in fla.who is a tree surgeon and when he takes down a mahogony or a live oak he gives the billet to me then i bring it to a fella that has a wood-mizer.
for $60 an hour i can usually expect about 600 to 800 b.f.an hour depending on whether it's quarter sawn or not.try and look around where you are it's more than worth it to put in the time.also you can sell off what you don't want or need. joe
