I thought this build along might be fun. I always like to see how thing are put together. Hopfully everyone will enjoy this also.

This is a surplus maching from Boeing. I have had for a month. It weighs 600lbs. It was loaded in my truck via fork lift and I removed it in 100lb chunks. It is in really good shape and complete.

I wanted to replace the bearings and belts. I hate the gold PM color so I decided to tear it completely down. It needed it anyway. It looks like that paint was an afterthought and they gave the job to a 3 year old to do after assembly:eek:. I have gold, orange, and grey parts in this thing. I had som time this weekend so time for a new paint job. I really like the hammered bronze from my scroll saw so that is is the new color. Here ar most of the parts in various stages of color.

First with the base and pole and a new set of wheels.

The elevating rack is pretty cool the way it is built. It is super smooth.

I'm going to get the head out of the way and put it on and build it up on the drill presss. I have no chance of getting on the drill press fully assembled.

With the hood painted white to make way for the pen stripe, I'm calling it a day to get some other stuff done.

My wiring plans got changed. I wasn't planning to use the large AB magnetic control box until I realized that the current on off switch won't work without it. It also has a neat foot switch that I didn't notice before so I am going to make it work. I had to call it a day. I will get it under power tomorrow.

Very cool. Nice refurb work.

Big Brother to my 1150VS.

And - zero evidence of the "arc of shame" on the production table - from an intelligent shop, not some high school-class place.

Let me know how the reeves operates in terms of low-speed vibrations after you get it under power. Time for me to open it up and tighten the drive components, I think.

Wow, Cary you are tearing through this restore. The color is a great improvement. Curious what you have in mind for the head. I have an 1150VS too and have always admired the 1200. You are going to love that in the shop.

Well I was. The AB switch up front is monatary which I didn't notice till I was putting it back together. That forced me to go back to the magnetic starter that I started with that I wasn't going to use. I spent yesterday getting that done. Then I noticed the motor was wired for 240V. I put that to 120V and while working on the starter noticed that the started is only rated for 1hp in 120V and 2hp in 240V. Motor is 1.5hp. Easiest to do is wire it back to 240 but I have a 120V right where I want it. I can't find a switch I like. Don't feel like swapping out a motor. That would be about as expensive as finding another starter inards. If I stay with the current motor starter it has a off foot switch which is kind of cool. I will have to think about it. I did plug hard wire the motor to see if it works. Works great at top speed but need some adjusting to get it to go down to low speed.

I put a white pen stripe on the hood but the stripe bllead through on the edges so I am nto sure what to do. I recreated the green/gold Powermatic stickers on the sides in red on some water slide decals but haven't put them on yet.

Not quite missing the arc of shame but it is pretty small.

test
The reeves drive is smoother at low speed than high speed on mine. That being said it is veery smooth. It would probably pass then nickle test at all of the speeds even with the moble base not planted.

Finished it up today. I decided to just wire up 220V and call it a day. After staring at the schematics for a little bit to figure out the foot switch(They hade it wired up diffferently) I did the deed and she fired up.

I made some water slide decals in red so I could get rid of the Green/Gold. I scanned them and then changed the color and printed it out on some waterslide paper. I just flipped over the current sign and put it on the back. I know the red one looks smaller but it is not. IT also looks liek a white background but it is the Al from It's not perfect but better then the current colors. It was kind of a pain since the they are over 14" long and I needed to print them out in 2 pieces and seam them in the middle. Again, not great but close enough.

I took another stab at the pin stripe. It went a little better. Not perfect.

My old table. I need to figure out how to fasten it. Probably be from the sides.

That looks great! I like the stripes. I did something similar with my PM66 and used the 3M Fine Line Tape. It gives a much better edge than other masking tape. This looks excellent.

I just drilled holes into the table itself in the coolant slot... and bolted the table through from under with wood screws...

My Grizzly drill press table is pristine, but I could take that shame easy. Beautiful job. Congratulations on taking the time to honor a fine machine.
