Keeping it in the family

My grandfather was a carpenter and my dad was his young apprentice before WWII. Dad inherited his father's tools, and I in time did the same. My son will have them when I'm gone.

These are a couple of my favorites, a Bailey No.5 and a No.6 with a corrugated sole. I think my dad would be proud to know that they're still being used.

Very nice planes - I,m sure your Dad and Granddad would be very pleased to know you're still using their tools. I know I would be. Nothing cooler to me than a family connection across generations embodied in a tool.

Awesome, always like to hear stuff like this. Actually my father recently handed down a plane to me from my great-great grandfather, who was a carpenter. It's a wooden body smoothing plane. I treat it more like a sculpture than a plane, but mostly because I like to admire it.

You're very lucky. I'm a ninth generation builder in my family since 1630, and have little to nothing that's been handed down that's any good. My son, on the other hand, will be very well outfitted with hand-me-downs.
