View Full Version : What did/will you buy from Lee Valley during Free Shipping?

Time to confess; what purchased did or will you make from Lee Valley during the free shipping campaign that expires at the end of the month? I am eyeing the DX60. Like the big brother but don't think the extra $100 is justified. They ought to do some research and see how much sales increase during free shipping periods. Perhaps they already have and offer free shipping during periods when orders historically dwindle during the year.

Picked up my first set of chisels! I got the set of four Narex Classic Bevel-Edge chisels and a single Narex mortise chisel. Of course, I couldn't get chisels with no way to sharpen them, so I also got the Veritas MKII honing guide. Can't wait! UPS says they should arrive on Monday.

Maybe I missed it but do you have a lathe for those turning tools Chris?

You didn't miss anything...I haven't mentioned it on the forum yet. Sure do....as of last weekend. When Paul and I were driving to PATINA last weekend I mentioned that I was thinking of making a pole lathe, but might also be keeping my eye out for an inepensive mini/midi lathe. Turns out he had a Rikon mini lathe with a NOVA chuck that he didn't use anymore (he has an AMAZING vintage Oliver in his shop). So anyway, I bought it from him for a very nice price, took it home with me has soon as we got back from PATINA. He included a few tools with it too (1" roughing gouge, 1" skew, parting tool and spear point beading tool), and I've been turning silly things all week (magic wands and vampire stakes and a mallet) just for practice. I've never had a lathe before and has only tried turning briefly previously, so I've been having a lot of fun figuring it out and just making dumb little things. I thought it would he harder but the learning curve..at least for basic stuff...is pretty short, so there a lot fo immediate gratification.

I might pick up a small detail spindle gouge and 3/4 skew. I really like using the skew a lot...and think I be happy to use a 3/4" for just about everything....just for practice I turned the vampire stake (3rd pic) with nothing but the 1" skew Paul included...still getting some catches but am getting pretty comfortable with it and its such a great tool and can do so much.

285486 285489 285488

I think I am going to still make a pole lather though. On Zach Ds recommendation I picked up Roys "The Woodwrights Guide" which has a nice pole lathe plan. Paul and I might make one for each of us once we finish my bench.

I didn't plan to buy anything but I came into a little unexpected cash this weekend and picked up tool rest for my grinder and a 1/4" Narex mortise chisel. I'm more excited about the wooden dowels I ordered. I can't find imperial sized dowels locally. Even the local Woodcraft sells imperial sized bits and cutters but metric plywood and dowels.

Just couldn't resist the free shipping this time. Besides the other items mentioned earlier two vise screws were ordered.

After looking at Marko's DIY wagon vise and the other bench threads I figured all that ash has been sitting in my shop long enough to acclimate and this better be the summer of bench building.

Unless someone here tells me I'm silly (and please speak up if something looks wrong).

Right handed Skew rabbet plane
Medium Shoulder plnae
Router plane
Saw file holder and set of files
2 tail vise screws (1 to make a wagon vice close to what was posted here, 1 to make a leg vise)

Main thing I am debating would be to swap out the shoulder plane for a rabbet block plane to trim shoulders.

Suggestions welcome.

Pictures are worth 1000 words.... Just got my order today. Still waiting on 2 chisels that were out of stock. Also not pictured is an Eclipse style honing guide. I forgot that the chisels didn't come with the plastic guards so I just placed an order for those. I know guards and the tool roll might be a bit safety overkill, but it will make my girlfriend feel better... and most likely save a few band-aids around the workbench.

I didn't want to spend this type of money on a rasp but from everyone's recommendations I decided to fork over the money. My purchases:

-Auriou 10", 9 Grain Rasp
-Japanese 8" Flat File
-Aux File/Rasp Handle

Used the rasp last night to round off some edges and it was quite impressive, fast cutting and leaving a very nice finish.

I understand John. I thought about only buying a few sizes, but when I did the math, it just made more sense to buy the set. I basically ended up getting 7 for the price of 6 with the per chisel savings. I can see how someone who purchased the 5 piece set would be miffed that they don't get the same deal.

Awesome chisels though. I spent the night making a registration jig for my side clamping honing guide and reground the primary bevels on all of them to match the angel my registration jig gives me. It was only off by a degree or two at most, so it didnt take long. I flattened the back of the 1" chisel and will be working on the other 4 I have to do the same. They really feel substantial and well balanced in the hand.

Cory,

I haven't actually used them yet, but I have been handling them extensively this last week as I've been working on a new set of holders form them on my "backwall" unit. I also have one of the Stanley New Sweethearts, nice steel, but I much prefer the handles of the PM-V11s. Like you said, substantial and well balanced in the hand.

Unless you only want wooden handled screwdrivers, your best bet from LV is this:

http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=32219&cat=1,43411,43417

They come with life-time warranty, but so far, after more than a year of use in my shop, none has been replaced.

The Parallel Tip screwdrivers are imported (from?) and so are the above ones (from Taiwan, I believe), but the latter has proven the best value screwdrivers in my shop.

That's a bummer. Return them and get the Grace screwdrivers (http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=70923&cat=1,43411,43417). I never thought I could like a screwdrivers so much, or even care what screwdriver I was using until I got those. I have the slot and the phillips, and like them so much I'm going to get the square ones too.

The largest one make a nice chipbreaker/plane tote & knob screw/frog screw driver and the smallest is great for the set screws on LV planes.

The Grace screwdrivers are awesome - I got them back when The Best Things was first offering them. My only complaint is the largest sizes are longer than I care for. I love the saw-nut screwdriver as well for my old disstons with the narrow screws.

I finally caved at the last minute today and ordered a gift for my dad and then ended up including the steel lapping plate, too. Just having it already machined flat and not having to track down something locally was worth it. I've still got a couple of old tools that need the backs helped out a little - if it gets me through a couple of blades easier than sandpaper has done in the past, it's payed for itself in my book. Now I just need to pick up some SiC or diamond.

Well, I didn't get anything too exciting during the free shipment, because Rob and company monitor my purchasing habits, and as soon as I place an order, they then offer free shipping.

Non- Free shipping order: Wenzlof Rip saw, Wenzlof Half Back (I felt like I needed to own something made by a fine craftsman and George is outside my price range I gather). A spokeshave kit and some drawer locks (my daughter keeps opening my nightstand drawer, where I keep, among other personal things, the equipment needed to avoid making another kid who would then open said drawer.). Oh and last but not least a large shoulder plane.

Free shipping: Some drawer knobs (kids trains and flowers), a tree house building book, some small box hinges, pretty unexciting compared to the other shipment.

I just brought the scraps too small to use, that I've been hoarding for years, to the scrap wood pile at the dump - finally let go of the one poplar board I've been using to experiment with as I tune up new toys . . . dadoes from the dado plane, grooves from the plow, rabbets from rabbets, holes from auger bits, lots of little cuts as I sharpen saws, beads from testing out scratch stock, and a bunch of chamfers from every chisel I've rehabbed in the last year. I think that board had seen more work in than any actual project over the last year. So I've been there. I think I've got a bonus coming from work, and decided the small chunk of that that I'd normally spend on tools needs to get spent on some nice, proper lumber, not this home center junk. . . .

Well I've got at least one more (maybe two) nice plane(s) I'll probably sell off shortly, and I've still got some cash leftover from selling tools at PATINA that I will add to the lumber fund. I have this Friday off (but am working the weekend ) so I'll probably head out to the lumber yard on Friday. My wife wants me to build here a very large shoe rack/shelf, and I've got some shop storage I want to build so I'll probably spend a good junk of dough just loading up on poplar, but I'm fresh out of walnut and cherry so I need to get some of that too for "nice" pieces. One these days I'll find a use for the stupid figured maple I wasted money on a year and a half ago that turned out to be reaction wood...guess I'll make a bunch of small candle boxes out of it or something...the stuff is so damn twisted that it would need to be planed down to almost 1/4" from (4/4) to get a reasonable sized piece flat...luckily I only purchased a few boards....hmmmm, maybe I'll resaw it into veneer.

The LV Small Plow Plane and a set of magnetically held vise jaw pads should arrive this Thursday. My tool budget has been shot for the year considering all I got from LV so far this year.

I've made do with flea market tool purchases most of my life but now I've decided to add some new tools to my arsenal. They sure are expensive but generally nice to use and look at. My first expensive (to me) tool purchase was an LN 102 block plane and I have never regretted it. It feels good, looks good and works well without me fussing with it.

I think so. I know I've used it on hinge screws from Horton Brasses, that I think were 4s. Not certain, but I assume the Horton screws are pretty standard and true to size. Honestly I don't pay a lot of attention to screw size. I just use the biggest drive that fits in the slot.

I jumped in for some of the Dubuque clamps. Been awhile since they were talked about on here. Used them for a glue up last night, and they're fantastic. I have a few Harbor Freight jobs that I did the Paul Sellers treatment on... No way. Going to throw them out and save my pennies for more of the Dubuques. After parting with two LN planes I had the funds to purchase the Veritas shooting plane. Can't say I regret this. I've tried other planes for shooting but this one is the complete deal. There's been some talk of screwdrivers on thread. Has anyone tried the "parallel-tip screwdrivers" Lee Valley has in their catalog? I like the way they look, but I'm wondering how they perform compared to the Grace screwdrivers. I'm going to need to replace the hodgepodge collection I use to strip screws with one of these days...

EDIT: never mind - I guess I missed the few pages of this thread that talk about the comparison between the two. I'll replace the parallel-tip screwdrivers with the grace ones in my wishlist.

You are really going to love having that plane. It just makes cutting rabbets so darn quick and easy. There is a little bit...and I do me little bit...of a learning curve for setup an use to get good square rabbets (with any fillister), but this thing just makes setup so easy and it holds its setting so well so once you get everything where you want it it keeps the setting the next time you take the blade in and out. Make sure you watch their marketing video on this one. Vic does a good job of going through basic setup and use.

My new goodies arrived late yesterday -- all Veritas: a Low Angle Block Plane, a Bevel-Up Smoother and a Low-Angle Jack, all with A2 blades. Aside from the free shipping, the best bonus is there are both 38* and 25* 2-1/4" blades that can be interchanged between the BUS and the LAJ depending on the grain being worked. I'm a bit poorer, but pleased to add these to my V-stable!

Alright here's what I got in lieu of buying (for once) anything during free shipping....

286471

About 80 BF of poplar to build a large shoe shelf for my wife and for various other things, and about 15 BF of Cherry in the form of a 10" or so wide 8/4 board...nothing planned for that immediately, it was just a nice board and I wanted to take something home with me a little more exciting than poplar.

This will keep my busy for a while...

Last time I wanted something more interesting from the lumber yard I ended up with a piece of gorgeous sapele that I can't seem to tame. Cherry was a much better choice.

Hey, I love working with poplar, and it's purty stuff once the heartwood starts turning brown. That much nice poplar would be exciting to me!

Actually, I really enjoy working poplar too. Its about as nice a wood to work by hand as there is. Its soft and straight, but not so soft that everything dents it like today's fast grown white pine and hemlock. It stains well, it paints well, and definitely and definitely can have a place as more than just unseen dividers and drawers sides. And you can get A LOT of it without spending loads of cash, which equates to lots of woodworking.

That said a big stack of cherry or walnut wood be even more exciting to me. Actually, a big stack of all 3 species, is about the peek of excitement for me when it comes to woodworking. I think I would be happy working nothing but those for the rest of my woodworking days.

I have money in paypal, but because LV does not accept PP, I have kept my money. Too bad too because I really wanted the shoot plane. I used one at a school in January and I feel that I really NEED one but.... oh well.

The quote I remember was " one can never have too much good wood " or something very close to that. That, sir, is a good bit of advice for a woodworker to live by. Dave B

Beall expanding collet set, rare earth magnets and epoxy. The magnets and epoxy I needed for a project and the collet set was to get it over the minimum and one of those "pretty sure I am going to be able to use these" purchases.
