This is my first large winged bowl. It is made from spalted oak and has an Inlace turquoise inlay. It measures 19 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 2 3/4". C&C welcomed.

Looks good Steve. Is the bowl on the surface of the wing or does the bottom protrude from the other side?

Considering where the heartwood ends inside the bowl, I'd say it extends past the plane...

I like the uneven top lip...

That is an interesting piece and nicely done. It must have caused you some pucker factor at times with the flying edges. The side view showing the lip and bowl position on wings helps to understand the complexity of the piece.

Dan--It is really a winged NE bowl or is it a NE winged bowl:D

Thomas--It was interesting turning this piece. I went to SWAT this past summer and watched Jimmy Clewes turn one of his pieces. It sounded like a propeller as he was turning the project. Based on that demonstration I turned this at over 1300+ RPM's. It really reduced the amount of air that the gouge was "cutting." It also helped as I get to that point in the cutting where there was not continues wood, I lightened the pressure on the cutting portion of the tool. And yes, I really had to make sure I knew where my fingers were at all times.

Very, very, nice and different. When I do one of those propeller blades I put a piece orange tape on the tips. Should put some on my fingers also.

Nicely done, Steve. It's a fine piece.

Also add that oak is not the easiest wood to attempt your first winged bowl on. Great job and the result is a beauty.

Nice job, but 1300 rpm is not nearly fast enough! Jimmy likes to crank it up way faster than that. :)

I've seen Jimmy turn several times over the past years (twice at a one day class up close when he later demonstrated for the East Texas Woodturners in Tyler). He does turn fast, but the 1300 for 19-1/2" sounds like it is way up there. I've done some like that at about 800 rpm possibly and that seemed fast enough, and outside the recommended range in Craft Supply of Dxrpm between 6000 and 9000. The 19.5 x 1300= 25,350, and I doubt that the piece was all that balanced like a symmetrical bowl or hollow form. The higher speed is definitely something that needs a lot of caution and working up to with experience and not for first time novice.
