My daughter wants a wall-mounted curio cabinet to hold her ceramic figurines and I'm looking at ideas that won't stretch my flatwork skills too far. Can anyone tell me how the top and bottom of the cabinet below might have been constructed? Is it molding or might it be solid slabs? If molding, is it acceptable to have a seated observer see the underside of the cabinet that the bottom molding surrounds?

Thanks,

It's hard to tell from that photo and it could be done either way. It's not uncommon to see shallow cases like that in which the top and bottom are a single piece with a profile run around the three sides but moldings would work fine, too. It depends on whether you want to show end grain or not. I wouldn't worry about a seat observer seeing that there is molding applied to the bottom if the molding is applied neatly. The molding should be the same height as the bottom is thick.

Ok, thanks.
